What is the function of a potentiometer?

A potentiometer is a manually adjustable, variable resistor with three terminals. Two terminals are connected to a resistive element, the third terminal is connected to an adjustable wiper. The position of the wiper determines the output voltage.

There are different types of potentiometers available to withstand today's manufacturing environment and offer the designer flexibility in selecting the best trimmer for the application. Typical applications include: measuring linear distance, angles or rotations in production equipment, industrial test and measurement equipment, and medical equipment.

Customers choose Bourns for our 70-year history of trimming potentiometer technology innovation and broad range of physical configurations; rugged enough to withstand today's manufacturing environments. Around the world, Bourns Trimpot® products are used in virtually every electronic market.
