Bourns Power & Signal Magnetics Solutions in Battery Management Systems
Continuous updates in global safety standards along with higher and higher working voltages has increased the need for advanced transformer solutions. This need applies to both the low power stage and communication BUS lines that require isolation between active ICs. This presentation serves to give and overview of the magnetics design challenges to meet these parameters and then give Bourns product solutions that solve these challenges.

Attendees of this training module will learn:
  • Battery management systems – overview
  • Power Conversion Components in BMS
    • Magnetics Design Challenges
  • Bourns Solutions for:
    • Isolated Power with Low Voltage
    • Isolated Signal with Low Voltage

Flyback Topology Highlights and Bourns Solutions for Low Power Conversion Drivers
Flyback operation is an energy storage topology operating in single quadrant operation of the magnetics BH material loop. The goals of this module are to explain how unavoidable parasitic components of transformer design affect leading edge transient behavior for this topology. In addition, how gapping is used to control the overall size of the transformer and tradeoffs involved between core size and saturation current handling. Bourns catalog flyback transformer solutions will be presented for various types of IC chipsets and generally what input requirements are needed to effectively design the transformer.

Attendees of this training module will learn:
  • Magnetics design involves multiple design tradeoffs
  • Tradeoffs affect the overall size and performance of the component
  • Effects of core gapping need to be considered
  • Safety and isolation play a large part of the design process in a given application
  • Automotive requirements can be a special case (BMS for example)
  • Separation requirements between low voltage and high voltage can be implemented several ways – typically by the transformer
  • Bourns offers a multitude of flyback transformer solutions

Speakers:
Paul Smith
Field Applications Engineer, Bourns, Inc.
Thomas Tran
Circuit Protection Technical Marketing Manager, Bourns, Inc.
The latest revision of IEC standards increased the voltage used to test MOVs. This accelerates thermal runaway in MOV components, requiring the designer to consider preventive ways to avoid this failure mode. Attendees will learn all the critical aspects of these IEC standards that affect their designs including IEC 62368-1. The webinar will also discuss how to upgrade MOV overvoltage protection to include the benefit of GDT isolation to meet this new IEC recommendation. Pin compatible solutions – including Bourns’ groundbreaking new IsoMOV™ Hybrid Protectors – are available that do not compromise performance, size, or cost.

Paul Smith is a field application engineer at Bourns, Inc. responsible for helping designers with circuit protection solutions. He has more than 40 years of engineering experience and holds over 20 patents. Smith earned his Master’s degree in electrical engineering from the University of Illinois.

Thomas Tran is the Technical Marketing Manager for the Circuit Protection Division at Bourns. Tran has more than 20 years of experience in circuit protection manufacturing, equipment design and application development. He holds a BSEE degree from The Institute of Electronic Technology in Louisiana. He is currently Vice-Chair and Secretary of IEEE PES-SPDC and is a member of the Working Group of 37A and 37B with the IEC SPD.

Speakers:
Matteo Bosio
Field Application Engineer, Bourns, Inc.
Jochen Schiffner
Technical Market Manager, Bourns, Inc.
The growth in the electric vehicle, industrial, marine and home energy storage markets is being propelled by the use of high-energy battery packs. These packs require battery management systems (BMS) with precise current measurement to monitor and maintain battery cells in good condition, to maximize output power, maintain safety, and offer accurate State of Charge information.

This webinar will present resistive current measurement solutions from Bourns, digging into design considerations, error sources and implementations that will help BMS designers to improve current sensing accuracy.

Furthermore, an overview of the Bourns standard and custom Power Conversion portfolio as well as the company’s Circuit Protection component lines optimized for BMS designs will be provided.

Matteo Bosio is a field application engineer at Bourns, Inc. responsible for technical support in the EMEA region. He has more than 15 years of electronic engineering experience. Matteo holds a master’s degree in Electronics from Universita’ degli Studi in Brescia, Italy

Jochen Schiffner is a technical market manager at Bourns, Inc. responsible for marketing and technical support of Bourns sensing products. He has more than 10 years of engineering and marketing experience within the sensors industry. Jochen holds a Dipl.-Ing. (FH) degree in Mechatronics and an MBA from Wilhelm Büchner Hochschule Darmstadt.
